San Francisco Neighborhoods - North Beach Real Estate
When Water St. marked the end of San Francisco and the
beginning of the Bay, sunny North Beach served as a first stop for waves
of immigrants in the 19th and early 20th centuries. You won't find any
"beach" in North Beach - it has long been buried by landfill. Standing
in the heart of what was once called the Barbary Coast, this eclectic
neighborhood, located between Russian and Telegraph hills, is a favorite
among tourists and locals alike. People are drawn to the area's sunny
weather, low rents and close proximity to downtown. The area has been
home to Chilean, Irish, Italian and Chinese newcomers. Though today
the neighborhood's population is ethnically mixed, it still holds a
decidedly Italian flavor and is a colorful focus of the Italian-American
community.
